Introduction
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a ginglymoarthrodial joint, which allows for rotational movement in the sagittal plane and a translation movement on its own axis. It is distinct from other synovial joints for a number of reasons, including its intra-articular disc, bilaterality and fibrous cartilage. Understanding the anatomy of this complex joint is essential for any physiotherapist who wants to work with clients who have TMJ dysfunction.
