Introduction

Pain is known as the sixth vital sign and healthcare professionals are taught to give credence to a patient’s pain symptoms. Pain can be a complex symptom of musculoskeletal disorders. These disorders often require the clinician to utilise movement analysis to identify likely sources of pain. By correcting deviant movement patterns to a more idealised movement pattern, subjective pain can be improved and ideal function can be reestablished. This course, the second of nine in the Gait Analysis and Training Programme, discusses common gait deviations associated with the back and upper leg including osteoarthritis, anterior and lateral hip pain, gluteal tendinopathy, piriformis syndrome and knee pain. This course also introduces gait special topics for the older population.
