Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) is a method of training that aims to improve the function of the respiratory muscles through specific exercises. This type of training has wide-ranging benefits, from improving performance in athletes to enhancing function in patients with chronic conditions like COPD or heart failure. Because the respiratory muscles are also essential for postural control and core stability, RMT can improve conditions like back pain and reduce falls risk. An understanding of this technique can, therefore, enhance the practice of physiotherapists from a range of backgrounds.
This course aims to provide you with an understanding of the rationale behind Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT). It also aims to enable you to implement an RMT protocol in your practice for a range of clients from athletes through to patients with chronic conditions.
This course is made up of videos, reading, discussions and a final quiz. The course content is split into the following sections:
- Section One: The Principles Behind Respiratory Muscle Training
- Section Two: Implementing Respiratory Muscle Training
- Section Three: Interview with Alison McConnell
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy professionals, clinicians and students.
This course is divided into 3 sections and it is suggested (but not required) that each section be completed over the duration of approximately a week. Please note that no deadlines are applied and this course can be started and completed according to your own schedule. We expect the required elements of each section/week to take around 4-5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
