About

Wala’a Awwad is a physiotherapist who works as a Physiotherapy Trainer with the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT). As a physiotherapist, Wala’a’s work at CVT is to facilitate the healing process of survivors of torture and trauma, who present with a wide range of musculoskeletal symptoms. Some of these symptoms are a result of injury while others are more closely connected to the survivor’s psychological health. Wala’a stresses the importance of making connections between physical symptoms and psychological health, since rehabilitation professionals not only address physical scars, but also the physical expressions of emotional wounds that cannot otherwise be seen.

Wala’a also helps her clients understand chronic pain. Because pain can act as a reminder of the torture situation, many torture survivors try to avoid pain-provoking activities. This behaviour may lead to physical deconditioning and further aggravation of pain, with a gradual social withdrawal and minimal involvement in activities of daily life. By helping the clients control their pain, we help them get back to their lives and their normal activities.
