Introduction

Approximately 10 million people live with Parkinson's. The prevalence of Parkinson's increases with age. 1.5-2% of the population aged over 60 are affected. Parkinson's is associated with the loss of dopamine-producing neurons in the substantia nigra of the midbrain. Clinical signs include tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. Other non-motor features include anosmia, sleep behaviour disorder, depression, autonomic dysfunction, and cognitive dysfunction. While the aetiology of this disease is not fully understood, it is believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role. This course, the third in a series on Parkinson's, explores how art-based therapies and self-management strategies can address a range of issues for individuals with Parkinson's, such as anxiety, mood, and stress, and improve physical, cognitive, emotional and social function.
