Introduction

During pregnancy, the female body undergoes a variety of anatomical and physiological changes. Women often struggle with pain and discomfort during pregnancy and in the postpartum period due to these changes. Physiotherapists are well equipped to prevent and manage many of the musculoskeletal issues that can arise during this time.

Aims

The aim of this course is to provide an overview of some of the hormonal, cardiovascular and musculoskeletal changes that occur during pregnancy and the postpartum period, as well as to provide guidance on the appropriate intervention strategies of common conditions during this stage.

Outline

This course is made up of videos, reading, forum posts and a final quiz. The course content is split into the following sections:

  1. Video
  2. Reading activity
  3. Quiz

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

Practicalities

Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 1.5-2 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.

Requirements to complete this course

  • summarise the current guidelines for exercise during pregnancy and the postpartum period
  • discuss the psychosocial/lifestyle issues relevant to a woman in her childbearing years
