Tips on accessing English language content
Our translation team is working very hard to make our courses accessible to a wider audience across the globe. Unfortunately in many cases it is not possible to translate all the resources involved in a Plus course (e.g. due to copyright restrictions on materials published by third parties). In these cases there are a variety of approaches that you can take to access this English language content and gain the maximum benefit from the course materials. The best approach will depend on your particular language and so you should experiment with options suggested until you find the tool(s) that work best for you:
Web pages and documents
We are fortunate to have access to a variety of free auto-translation tools on the Internet. These technologies continue to develop with increases in their accuracy and also new options becoming available. At the time of writing we would suggest trying the tools below. Please note that each tool offers a different set of language translation combinations so you may find your options are limited depending on your language:
- DeepL – identified by our team as providing the best translations but covering a smaller set of languages than the alternatives
- Google Translate – the web’s most popular translation tool offering the widest variety of language combinations
- Microsoft Bing Translate – reviewers suggest this provides better translation of conversational language
Tip – DeepL and Google Translate both offer the option to translate an uploaded file.
Youtube videos
Physiopedia articles will often include YouTube videos provided by third parties. When there is a narration in a video the Subtitles / Closed Captions feature of the YouTube video player can be turned on and an auto-translation of those captions also can be enabled:
- Click the CC button in the video player tool bar. When the CC button is underlined, subtitles / closed captions will be displayed.
- To translate these closed captions click the Gear cog icon and select “Subtitles/CC”
- Click the Auto-translate option and choose your language from the list
