The humble quiz has evolved from a simple evaluation tool into a powerful learning experience that healthcare professionals actively seek out. Research and feedback from our Physiopedia Plus (Plus) learners reveal five key ways well-designed quizzes can really improve your healthcare education, as a student or as an educator.
When we think about educational assessments, quizzes often bring to mind anxiety-inducing experiences. Yet we have found that something remarkable happens when Plus learners engage with thoughtfully designed quiz questions – they frequently report quizzes as highlights of their learning experience, even requesting more opportunities to test their knowledge. Well-constructed questions are valuable in healthcare education due to their validity, reliability and educational impact.
Plus participant feedback consistently shows enthusiasm for quizzes across all of our courses. But what makes them so effective? Here are five evidence-based reasons quizzes enhance healthcare education:
- Enhancing memory retention
The “testing effect” explains why quizzes work, with cognitive science showing that retrieving information improves long-term retention. When healthcare professionals actively recall information rather than passively reviewing it, they remember more in clinical practice. We use this approach with Plus courses to build professional assurance alongside knowledge, and also offer standalone knowledge assessments so that members can validate their knowledge in specific areas of interest, identify learning gaps and document their ongoing professional development.
- Personalising the learning experience
Technology has expanded quiz possibilities in healthcare education, allowing for the potential for adaptive quizzing – where question difficulty is adjusted based on learner performance and preference. To harness these possibilities at Plus, we have been developing the Physiopedia AI Assistant (PAI) to generate assessments tailored to each individual’s learning needs – offering short-form questions, multiple-choice questions, clinical reasoning challenges and complex case-based scenarios – whilst also providing specific guidance and tips when learners answer incorrectly. We are very excited that PAI knowledge check will soon be incorporated into all course offerings (watch this space!).
