Introduction

Pain is a complex, multidimensional experience, with sensory, emotional, psychological, and social components. It is a major cause of disability globally and can impact many aspects of a person's daily life. Optimal management of acute and chronic pain requires healthcare professionals to understand the multifaceted nature of pain and consider the biological, social and psychological factors that may be influencing a person's pain.

This course explores pain through a biopsychosocial lens. It defines pain, explores its types and mechanisms and uses case examples to help healthcare professionals develop an understanding of contemporary pain science principles and non-pharmacological management strategies.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • differentiate between acute and chronic pain and four pain mechanisms
  • discuss the three domains of the biopsychosocial model as they relate to pain and function / occupational performance
  • identify at least four evidence-based, non-pharmacological pain management interventions
