Introduction

Transforming information collected during patient encounters into effective, patient-centred care plans requires systematic thinking and strategic decision-making. This course explores four essential reasoning strategies that form the foundation of expert clinical practice. It discusses the path to establishing realistic prognoses using evidence-based indicators, engaging patients through shared decision-making, developing SMART goals grounded in current research, and recognising when rapid clinical judgment is needed for patient safety.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify the characteristics and appropriate applications of four clinical reasoning strategies (predictive, collaborative, scientific, and intuitive)
  • discuss the three main categories of prognostic indicators used in predictive reasoning
  • explain how to use collaborative and scientific reasoning to establish patient-centred, evidence-based SMART goals
