This course is part of a programme:

Introduction

While temporomandibular disorders affect millions of patients worldwide, the muscles of mastication are often under-assessed and under-treated in clinical practice. This course introduces the anatomy, biomechanics and clinical significance of the four muscles of mastication. It covers evidence-based palpation and treatment techniques for each muscle, the fascial connections between the temporomandibular joint and the rest of the body, and common parafunctional habits that contribute to muscle dysfunction.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify the origin, insertion, innervation, and primary functions of the four muscles of mastication and their role in jaw movements
  • describe proper palpation techniques for assessing the four muscles of mastication
  • identify the relationship between parafunctional habits, muscle dysfunction, and associated symptoms, such as headaches, tinnitus, and ear dysfunction

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
