Introduction

Physiotherapists are often the first point of contact after a concussion, whether pitch-side, in the clinic, or in primary care. Recognising a concussion, on and off the field, requires sound clinical reasoning and a clear understanding of concussion assessment. This course introduces the diagnostic criteria for mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and the SCAT6 assessment tool. It also explores specific risk factors that influence recovery and evidence-based management strategies for the first 24 to 48 hours after injury.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • explain the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine’s six diagnostic criteria for mild traumatic brain injury/concussion
  • identify on-field signs of concussion and the red flags that necessitate urgent medical review
  • select appropriate immediate management strategies for a patient with concussion in a given case scenario

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
