Introduction

Physical activity is one of the most useful tools in clinical practice, but it requires clients to act on advice. The way we discuss physical activity and support clients strongly influences whether lasting change happens. This course provides foundational knowledge to promote physical activity in clinical practice. It covers how physical activity is defined, its health benefits, barriers that affect engagement, and how international guidelines translate into individualised prescription.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe physical activity, exercise, and sport, and where clients sit on the activity spectrum
  • discuss the physiological adaptations, health benefits, and WHO guidelines relevant to physical activity
  • determine appropriate physical activity approaches for different clients, based on their barriers and enablers

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
