This course is part of a programme:
Introduction
The World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines on physical activity and sedentary behaviour set out how much activity adults aged 18-64 years need for good health. These population-level recommendations are not, however, individual prescriptions. This course provides the tools to translate these guidelines into personalised, realistic plans for the person in front of you. It covers how to define and measure intensity, the components of aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, and how to use the FITT-VP framework to structure a physical activity programme.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- discuss training intensity and the measures used to assess it, including METs, the talk test, the rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and heart rate
- differentiate between types of physical activity and the dosing parameters appropriate for clients at varying fitness levels
- design an individualised physical activity prescription using the FITT-VP framework, incorporating client preference and adherence principles
Target audience
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
