Introduction

Many people experience a range of emotional responses to injury or illness. These responses can significantly impact a person's engagement with treatment, their progress, and outcomes. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in recognising and addressing the psychological impact of illness and injury. They must also be able to identify when patients need additional psychological support. This course introduces common psychological responses to trauma or illness and interventions that can help improve a person's rehabilitation outcomes and quality of life.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify common psychological responses to injury or illness and key signs that specialist support is required
  • describe key psychological barriers and facilitators to patient engagement with rehabilitation
  • discuss at least three general interventions that can support a patient's psychological needs in a rehabilitation setting

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
