Introduction
Ankle sprains are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries, but despite their frequency, they are not simple to assess or manage. Effective treatment requires understanding the biomechanics of both passive structures (bones and ligaments) and active structures (muscles). While most ankle injuries are managed conservatively with a generally good prognosis, achieving optimal outcomes depends on thorough assessment and appropriate rehabilitation. This course highlights the complexity of ankle sprains and provides an overview of evidence-supported management approaches.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- discuss the anatomy, risk factors and outcomes associated with ankle sprains
- explain two classification grading systems for ankle sprains
- discuss the investigation modalities used to assess ankle sprains
- design appropriate evidence-based therapeutic goals and treatment interventions for an individual with an ankle sprain based on a case scenario
