Introduction

The distal tibiofibular syndesmosis is formed by the tibia, fibula, and four ligaments. Syndesmosis sprains tend to occur more frequently than we expect. Understanding the aetiology and pathology can help physiotherapists effectively identify syndesmosis injuries. In this course, Helene Simpson discusses the mechanism of syndesmosis injuries. She also provides an overview of how to manage these injuries in clinical practice and help patients return to daily and sports activities post-injury.

• discuss the anatomy relevant to a syndesmosis injury
• describe the pathological process related to a syndesmosis injury
• explain the diagnostic procedures and special tests used to detect a syndesmosis injury
• discuss conservative management of syndesmosis injuries

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
