Introduction

When tissue deformation occurs, the sensory receptors in the skin, muscles, joints, ligaments, and tendons provide proprioceptive feedback to the central nervous system. Skin sensory receptors and musculoskeletal receptors are the main sensors controlling the relative position of the body parts and muscle activity. They respond to touch, vibration, pressure and stretch on the skin. The length and tension of the skeletal muscles are controlled by proprioception to coordinate motor control. Proprioception can be impacted by injury and should, therefore, be considered in the rehabilitation of ankle injuries. This course will explore various techniques that can be used to retrain proprioception after an ankle injury.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the physiology of proprioception
  • explain changes in proprioception that are associated with ageing and injury
  • identify relevant body systems that can influence ankle proprioception
  • select appropriate evidence-based therapeutic interventions to retrain proprioception based on a simple case scenario

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
