This course is part of a programme:

Introduction

Osteoarthritis is the leading cause of chronic pain and disability in older people in high-income countries. Degenerative osteoarthritis of the 1st metatarsophalangeal joint (MPJ-1), known as hallux rigidus, affects between 2.5 and 60% of the population over 50-65 years of age. In its end stages, hallux rigidus is characterised by a complete absence of sagittal plane motion at the MPJ-1, specifically dorsiflexion. This course discusses conservative management concepts for hallux rigidus and course instructor, Robert Finch, describes his personal experience of hallux rigidus.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the anatomy of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the aetiology of hallux rigidus

  • summarise the nonsurgical and surgical management of hallux rigidus
