Introduction
In 2021, as many as 30 million children and young people aged under 18 were forcibly displaced. Displaced persons, particularly children, are at risk for abuse, neglect, and violence and must be considered a specific vulnerable target group. Because these children often experience trauma or extreme stress, they are at risk of developing complex mental and physical health needs. Yet accessing support and receiving needed services is often difficult or delayed. This course will explore key areas that must be considered when working with children and young people who have experienced displacement.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- discuss the key impacts of forced migration on displaced children and young people
- identify at least three strategies that can help address the increased risk of developmental delay in displaced children
- list at least three signs of trauma in displaced children and young people
- identify three treatment approaches that can be useful when working with displaced children and young people
Target audience
This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
