Introduction

Cerebral palsy is a group of neurological disorders occurring in infancy and early childhood that affects movement and muscle tone. While cerebral palsy is a permanent condition, it is non-progressive. It occurs due to damage in the developing brain. Injury to the brain can occur before, during or after birth. This course will review the aetiology and pathology of cerebral palsy, highlighting signs and symptoms, classifications and diagnostic tools used for assessment.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• discuss key risk factors and signs of cerebral palsy
• describe the three types of cerebral palsy
• identify at least two classification systems used for individuals with cerebral palsy

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
