Introduction

Low back pain is the leading cause of disability in most countries. Numerous classification systems are used to manage pain and improve function, including the treatment-based classification (TBC) system. This validated system is designed to help clinicians make treatment decisions based on a patient's clinical presentation. It triages patients with back pain into three treatment groups: medical management, rehabilitation management and self-care management. Within the rehabilitation category, there are three specific management approaches. This course provides a detailed discussion of the TBC system. It also briefly discusses three other commonly used classification systems.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• discuss the key features of the treatment-based classification system for low back pain
• select which management approach and interventions would be appropriate for an individual with low back pain in a given case study using the treatment-based classification system
• identify at least one feature of three other commonly used classification systems for low back pain

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
