Every person—no matter who they are or where they live—should be able to get the quality health services they need without facing financial hardship. No-one should have to choose between healthcare and putting food on the table. This is the message we stand by and want to share on this Universal Health Coverage Day 2024.
Access to health care shouldn’t depend on where you live, how much money you have, or your social status. Unfortunately, countless individuals still face barriers to receiving the care they need. Universal health coverage (UHC) is a goal to ensure that all people, everywhere, can get the quality health services they need without facing financial hardship. Universal health coverage and the right to health, is a goal that depends on political commitment and action. Governments have a responsibility to ensure healthcare is affordable or free, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable. Investing in health systems strengthens communities and boosts economic prosperity.

Universal Health Coverage Day is the annual rallying point for the global movement for health for all. It is celebrated each year on 12 December to mark the anniversary of the United Nations’ historic and unanimous endorsement of universal health coverage in 2012. This year’s Universal Health Coverage Day 2024 is a call to decision makers around the world to protect people from financial hardship when accessing health services. It’s about making sure that all people can get quality health services without financial hardship.
An important part of being able to access healthcare is supporting the development of a healthcare workforce, which relies on equitable access to education and training. Improving global health through access to rehabilitation knowledge is the mission of Physiopedia and is fundamental to everything we do. From creating open access knowledge resources via the Physiopedia website, to our international workforce development projects and in the ethos behind Physiopedia Plus (Plus) to support learners in low-income countries – we strive to contribute to break down barriers to rehabilitation knowledge.
Universal health coverage is key to ensuring everyone’s right to health. It means that everyone can access the health services they need without financial difficulty. This requires not just investment in health systems, but also a commitment from every one of us to support policies and initiatives that promote health equity.
