As we reflect on 2024, it’s been another extraordinary year of innovation, collaboration and global impact for Physiopedia. Our community has truly come together to advance rehabilitation knowledge through continually updated evidence-based content, groundbreaking research, educational initiatives and technological innovation. Whether through our comprehensive educational programmes, published research or the ever-popular annual massive open online course (MOOC), the Physiopedia community has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to sharing and advancing rehabilitation knowledge worldwide.
Global reach and impact
The numbers tell an inspiring story – over 31 million people visited Physiopedia this year from every country in the world. That adds up to a whopping 71 million page views and this year the most accessed resource was the very popular page on Shoulder Special Tests, which has had more than 348,000 views during the year. These astounding metrics illustrate the true impact of our mission – to make rehabilitation knowledge accessible worldwide – and highlight the continuing demand and need for reliable, quality, evidence-based rehabilitation information.

International volunteer community
Physiopedia wouldn’t be what it is today without our incredible team of over 70 volunteers from around the world. This diverse group includes contributors from Canada, Egypt, India, Pakistan, Rwanda, the United States and beyond. Whether creating new pages, sharing expertise or supporting innovative projects, each volunteer brings unique perspectives and passionate dedication to our mission. It’s truly amazing to see such a tapestry of cultures, countries and experiences come together to create something that is so impactful.
This year’s Volunteer Orientation Course welcomed 89 keen rehabilitation professionals from 19 countries, all with an interest in contributing to the professional global knowledge platform. Throughout the year, we celebrated the outstanding contributions of volunteers Ziya “Z” Altug, Greg Slater, Kateryna Tymruk-Skoropad, Khloud Shreif, Carina Therese Magtibay, Olha Kovalchuk, Neelum Zehra, Herbert Omoding, Hsu Wai Mon Oo, Martina Lukin, and Alicia Fernandes. These individuals consistently went above and beyond in their efforts towards the Physiopedia mission. The annual Physiopedia Awards recognised extraordinary contributions, with Sehriban Ozmen receiving the Top Contributor Award for creating the most content, Angeliki Chorti earning the Physiopedia Superstar Award for exceptional contributions across multiple areas and Filip Maric winning the Best Project Award for leading an impactful content development initiative.
Our volunteer community embraced both professional growth and personal connection throughout the year. From thought-provoking discussions on imposter syndrome and managing trauma to lighter moments during our regular social meet ups known as Physiopedia Teatime. These conversations ranged from compassionate care to sharing favourite recipes, even inspiring the idea for a global Physiopedia cookbook – these interactions strengthened our bonds and highlighted the importance of human connection in achieving our shared mission.
Introducing PAI – the Physiopedia AI Assistant
2024 marked a defining moment with the launch of the Physiopedia AI Assistant – a groundbreaking tool that’s revolutionising how rehabilitation professionals access and apply evidence-based knowledge. PAI serves as an innovative resource that helps healthcare professionals navigate complex clinical questions with confidence. What makes PAI truly unique is that it’s the only artificial intelligence (AI) tool specifically built on Physiopedia’s extensive rehabilitation knowledge base, ensuring responses are profession-specific and grounded in reliable evidence. By providing quick access to evidence-based information, it streamlines the decision-making process and enhances the quality of patient care. One of PAI’s most powerful features is its ability to communicate in multiple languages, breaking down barriers and ensuring rehabilitation professionals worldwide can access the knowledge they need, regardless of their native language. As AI technology rapidly advances, PAI continues to evolve and improve, staying at the forefront of rehabilitation knowledge delivery. The enthusiasm and positive feedback from our community have been overwhelming, demonstrating how technology can enhance rather than replace professional expertise.
Research and international engagement
This year, Physiopedia’s influence extended far beyond digital reach through groundbreaking publications, influential conferences and transformative educational initiatives. Our research contributions included critical studies on rehabilitation competencies, the impact of MOOCs on professional development and global access to continuing professional development. These publications, appearing in prestigious journals such as BMC Medical Education and BMJ Open, are helping to shape the future of rehabilitation education and practice.
- Rehabilitation professions’ core competencies for entry-level professionals: a thematic analysis. This study conducted a thematic analysis to identify and refine core competencies for entry-level rehabilitation professionals. It offers critical insights into ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to meet the demands of global healthcare.
- Entry-to-practice rehabilitation competencies and the Rehabilitation Competency Framework: A gap analysis. This research provides an in-depth gap analysis of the Rehabilitation Competency Framework, revealing areas requiring attention to better align entry-to-practice competencies with global needs.
- Exploring the influence of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) for empowering rehabilitation professionals to meet the needs of forcibly displaced persons. Published in BMC Medical Education, this study highlights the transformative impact of online education in equipping rehabilitation professionals with the skills to address challenges faced by displaced populations.
- Assessing global access to continuing professional development for rehabilitation professionals: A mixed methods study of current practices and perceived needs. Published in BMJ Open, this mixed-methods study examines current practices and gaps in access to continuing professional development for rehabilitation professionals worldwide, guiding future efforts to support professional growth.
- Entry-to-practice rehabilitation competencies and the Rehabilitation Competency Framework: A gap analysis. Featured in the Archives of Rehabilitation Research and Journal of Interprofessional Care, this research highlights critical competencies for entry-level rehabilitation professionals, ensuring standards are continually advanced to meet global needs.
The Physiopedia team presence at international conferences amplified our global impact. At the World Physiotherapy Africa Region Congress in Cape Town, our Uganda team showcased their progress in strengthening rehabilitation through the International Rehabilitation Education Training Toolkit (IRETT), the Second All-Ukrainian Congress on Physical Therapy provided a platform to discuss AI’s role in revolutionising rehabilitation practices, while the PhysioSwiss Leadership Forum highlighted our growing influence on improving clinical outcomes.
The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine commended Physiopedia for our contributions to aligning academic rehabilitation programmes with international standards. Similarly, the success of the IRETT initiative in Pakistan gained national recognition, highlighting our transformative impact on strengthening the country’s rehabilitation workforce.
Strengthening the rehabilitation workforce
Our workforce development initiatives continued to break new ground in 2024. In its thirteenth year, the annual Physiopedia MOOC again showed the strength of delivering a free online course. This year’s AI Masterclass attracted thousands of participants, opening new doors for physiotherapists and other rehabilitation professionals to integrate AI into their clinical practice. This course with Michael Rowe (that continues to be available for Physiopedia Plus members) showcased the importance of AI as an adjunct to practice, not a replacement for professional skills. Participants came away from the course with confidence to enhance their practice through the use of AI.
As part of the continuing USAID-funded ReLAB-HS activity, where Physiopedia is a consortium partner, the team continued the development of the IRETT through nine pilot implementation projects in Uganda, Ukraine, Pakistan and Myanmar. The IRETT is a set of resources that can be integrated into any region’s education or training activities that supports workforce development to build rehabilitation capacity and improve the quality of rehabilitation care. The IRETT Tools are specific to identified needs to strengthen academic programmes, regulation and clinical skills. Our commitment to low and middle-income countries (LMICs) remained steadfast throughout the year. Through education, collaboration and resource development we supported professionals in settings where resources are limited but the need for quality rehabilitation services is immense.

As we look ahead, we’re filled with enthusiasm for what’s to come. The foundations we’ve laid this year – from AI integration to expanding global partnerships – set the stage for even greater impact. Our community continues to grow, our reach continues to expand and our passion for improving global health through accessible rehabilitation knowledge burns brighter than ever.
