Introduction

Individuals with lower-limb amputations often develop gait deviations to compensate for, or adapt to, various prosthetic and physiological factors. When evaluating prosthetic gait, we must understand the gait cycle, identify gait deviations and assess the functional impact of these deviations. By connecting amputee gait deviations with gait function, rehabilitation professionals can help improve functional limitations and, thus, optimise overall outcomes in patients with lower-limb amputations. This course explores specific strategies to assist with observational gait analysis for individuals with lower-limb amputations.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• identify the two phases of the gait cycle, five key body functions during gait and at least three prosthetic and physiological factors that can impact gait in individuals with lower-limb amputations
• differentiate between specific gait deviations and their impact on gait function in individuals with lower-limb amputations using the Quick Gait Assessment and Intervention Toolbox (G.A.I.T.) form

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

• Availability - this course is online and can be completed on your own schedule.
• Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 1.5-2 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
• Types of Activities - This course includes instructional and/or practical videos, reading activities, AI supported learning activities, reflection, evaluation forms, a quiz and additional resources.
