The World Rehabilitation Alliance (WRA) has recently published a new position statement on the importance of investing in quality rehabilitation education and training to ensure healthy lives and promote wellbeing for all at all ages. Physiopedia, as a member of the WRA workforce workstream, is proud to have contributed to this important statement.
In response to the vast unmet global need for rehabilitation, the WRA was established in 2022 to promote rehabilitation “… as an essential health service that is integral to Universal Health Coverage and to the realisation of Sustainable Development Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages”.
Rehabilitation is relevant to all people throughout their life course, not just those with long-term disabilities. Its primary focus is to improve functioning so that people can live as independently as possible and perform to their maximum capacity…benefitting not only the individual but also society as a whole.
A capable rehabilitation workforce is imperative to meet a population’s health needs. As a founding member of the WRA Physiopedia contributes expertise to global rehabilitation advocacy efforts, most specifically as part of the workforce workstream – one of five WRA focused workstreams and one of the ten areas for action outlined in the Rehabilitation 2030 initiative. In a new position statement, the WRA calls upon healthcare decision-makers in WHO Member States to increase investment in rehabilitation education and training to improve access to quality rehabilitation services – considered vital for more equitable access to the full array of rehabilitation services to enable people to function at their highest capacity.
The WRA further outlines specific recommendations for investment in quality rehabilitation education and continuing professional development to ensure evidence-based quality services and promote workforce retention, as well as in developing collaborations and partnerships and in assuring sustainability of a culturally responsive and competent workforce.
As global healthcare systems continue to evolve, this position statement serves as a crucial reminder that investing in rehabilitation education isn’t merely an expense, but a strategic investment in society’s wellbeing and economic prosperity. These recommendations can guide in building resilient healthcare systems that work towards achieving universal health coverage and sustainable development.
