Introduction
Rehabilitation professionals often focus on individual health behaviours, clinical interventions, and social determinants of health. However, the commercial sector has become a powerful force affecting health outcomes. Pharmaceutical companies, food and beverage corporations, technology firms, and fossil fuel industries can all influence health through their products, marketing strategies, lobbying efforts, and global supply chains. This course explores how these commercial determinants impact health outcomes, contribute to health inequity, and affect healthcare access.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- identify key commercial determinants of health and their mechanisms of influence on health outcomes, health equity, and healthcare access
- discuss how commercial determinants impact health at the individual patient, community, and population levels
- describe at least three strategies healthcare professionals can adopt to mitigate the impact of commercial determinants of health in clinical practice, in the community and at a policy level
Target audience
This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
