Introduction

Upper limb amputation is a life-changing event and has a profound impact on a person’s function, work, daily and recreational activities. Prosthesis use can have a positive impact on outcomes, facilitating participation in various activities. Appropriate prosthesis selection, fitting and training help to maximise engagement. This course introduces transradial prosthetics, exploring the demographics and goals of different patient groups (traumatic, tumour-related, and congenital). It also discusses the types of prostheses and componentry available, socket design, suspension methods, and measurement and fitting procedures.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • identify the key epidemiological features of transradial amputation and characteristics of different patient groups (i.e., traumatic, tumour-related, and congenital)
  • differentiate between three types of transradial prostheses (passive, body-powered, and myoelectric control) and their associated componentry
  • describe key principles of socket design, suspension methods, and measurement and fitting procedures for transradial prostheses

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
