Introduction

Shoulder function depends on the coordinated movement of the scapula, the thoracic spine, and the glenohumeral joint. This course takes a systematic approach to scapular assessment, beginning with the influence of the thoracic spine and rib cage on scapular position and mobility, before focusing on the scapula itself. Through a combination of anatomy, biomechanics, and demonstrations, this course presents a practical framework for identifying scapular dysfunction in shoulder rehabilitation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • describe the expected resting position of the scapula across three planes and how the thoracic spine and rib cage influence scapular positioning
  • explain the primary muscles responsible for each of the five scapular motions and how dysfunction or imbalance in these muscles can alter scapular position
  • discuss a clinical assessment framework to guide clinical decision-making for scapular dysfunction

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
