Introduction

This course uses the case of a former competitive swimmer with recurrent shoulder pain to demonstrate a structured approach to clinical reasoning. It takes you through the assessment, covering posture, breathing, passive and active motion, joint mobility, and palpation. The aim is to build a complete clinical picture before any treatment is applied. It then discusses early treatment, focusing on soft-tissue interventions to address mobility impairments, before outlining the next stages of rehabilitation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • interpret clinical findings across the glenohumeral joint, scapula, and thoracic spine to identify the primary impairments contributing to persistent shoulder pain
  • discuss the assessment and first-session treatment of a patient with persistent shoulder pain using a test-treat-retest approach

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
