Introduction
Sleep is an important part of our daily routine and we spend about a third of our time sleeping. Quality sleep is vital for good health and optimal function in our professional capacity. But what is sleep? Why do we need sleep and what are the physiological processes involved in sleep? Dale Whelehan discusses these topics in this first course of a three-part series on sleep.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the current understanding of sleep
- Compare at least four different theories aimed at explaining the function of sleep
- Compare the two stages of sleep (REM and NREM) with regards to the assessment of brain wave activity and characteristics of each stage
- Correctly identify at least 1 hormone and 3 parts of the brain involved in the process of sleep
Target audience
This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
