Introduction

Headache disorders are highly prevalent and are associated with significant disease burden for the individual and the wider community. There are many different types of headaches, from primary headaches like migraine to secondary headaches like cervicogenic headache. Cervicogenic headaches may respond to exercise and manual techniques whereas other headache disorders require medical review. Because physiotherapists often encounter headaches in clinical practice, it is important that you can make a differential diagnosis between different types of headaches and detect any red flag signs and symptoms.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the epidemiology of headaches, including cervicogenic headache, tension-type headaches and migraine
• summarise the neuro-anatomy that enables pain to refer from the neck to the head, and vice versa
• identify four key features that can be used to help differentiate between cervicogenic headache, tension-type headache and migraine
• discuss red flag features for headache that, when present, require medical review
• elect an appropriate headache diagnosis based on a clinical case scenario

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

• Availability - this course is online and can be completed on your own schedule.
• Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
• Types of Activities - This course includes instructional and/or practical videos, reading activities, AI supported learning activities, reflection, evaluation forms, a quiz and additional resources.
