Introduction

Hind limb lameness is more common in canine patients than forelimb lameness. There are many different causes of lameness, from acute injuries to chronic, degenerative conditions. While dogs of all ages, breeds and sizes can develop hind limb lameness, the prevalence of specific conditions varies across species. This course explores the aetiology of a number of different hind limb conditions, including pelvic fracture, hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament disease, before discussing their overall management.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• list five hip / pelvic dysfunctions and five stifle conditions that can cause hind limb lameness in canine patients
• describe the clinical features of common orthopaedic conditions of the canine hind limb
• discuss the aetiology of orthopaedic conditions that cause hind limb lameness in canine patients
• discuss surgical interventions commonly used to manage hip dysplasia and cranial cruciate ligament rupture in canine patients
• design an appropriate evidence-based physiotherapy management strategy for a canine patient with hind limb lameness based on a case study
• discuss the anatomy of the canine hind limb

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

• Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 4-4.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
