Introduction

Vertigo is defined as the illusion of movement of oneself or of the environment. It is caused by dysfunction of the vestibular system. However, there is a range of non-vestibular conditions that cause similar symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness or a sensation of floating or swimming. Patients may use the term vertigo interchangeably with these other types of dizziness, so it is essential to conduct a thorough subjective and objective evaluation in order to determine the nature and cause of a patient’s symptoms.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the components of the subjective and objective assessment of vestibular patients
  • describe seven conditions which should be considered in the subjective assessment of vestibular patients
  • justify the use of specific outcome measures on vestibular patients
  • interpret the results of the subjective and objective assessment of a vestibular patient based on a case scenario

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
