Introduction

Dancers must be able to complete a range of complex movements and actions, often at extreme ranges of motion. Clinicians working with dancers must understand these unique requirements and the demands placed on the dancer's foot and ankle. This course describes the anatomy of the ballet foot and discusses discipline-specific requirements.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the bones of the foot and ankle in detail
  • describe the extrinsic and intrinsic foot muscles
  • compare the three arches of the foot with regards to function
  • discuss how the ankle and foot ligaments contribute to the stability in ballet dancers

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
