Introduction
Children with cerebral palsy face unique challenges when learning, practising, and mastering everyday tasks. Their ability to participate in activities like dressing, feeding, bathing, and toileting is influenced by multiple factors, including body structures and function, environmental conditions, and personal characteristics. Many children experience difficulties with sequencing, timing, and grading motor activities due to impaired sensory integration, reduced fine motor control and motor planning, and decreased upper-body coordination. In this course, we explore occupational therapy interventions and strategies as part of a multi-disciplinary team to support the development of independent living skills in children with cerebral palsy.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- discuss how seven key principles of activity of daily living training (i.e. child participation, addressing individual needs, motivation and goal-setting, teaching style selection, establishing routines, breaking up tasks, and environmental preparation) can improve a child's ability to learn daily skills
- explain the benefit of two standardised assessment tools to evaluate a child's performance of activities of daily living
- select appropriate activity of daily living interventions, incorporating environmental modifications, appropriate teaching methods, and caregiver training, to maximise a child's independence and participation in self-care routines
