Introduction

Skilful patient-clinician communication largely contributes to accurate diagnoses, effective management, better patient compliance and improved clinical outcomes. Research supports the use of patient-centred medicine, which dictates an individualised biopsychosocial approach to patient communication and management rather than a generic gaining of biomedical information. The Calgary Cambridge Model, discussed in this programme, provides practical evidence-based guidelines for a comprehensive medical interview across various disciplines in medicine.

Aims

This program aims to upskill physiotherapists across all sub-specialities in patient-centred communication and medical interview conduction. After completion, participants should have an improved understanding of the process of communication, the basic construction of a medical interview according to the Calgary-Cambridge Model, the importance of incorporating both biomedical and psychosocial investigations, facilitating treatment planning, and managing patient uncertainties. Participants should also be able to negotiate around aspects such as cultural sensitivity and personality-specific approaches during communication.

This programme will cover the following topics:

  1. Communication – The Most Potent Tool in the Box
  2. The Person Behind the Patient
