Introduction

When considering global health, we must remember that many interconnected systems contribute to health equity or inequality, including the environment and climate, economics, class or social position and urbanisation.

This course uses the various lenses of global health discussed in the Overview of Global Health course to explore some of the emerging trends and most pressing issues in this field of health. You will gain insight into the importance of adopting systems thinking to understand the driving forces behind health burdens and inequities. You will also be encouraged to engage in the process of unlearning and relearning global health trends, discourses and paradigms that connect health and non-health sectors.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe current global health trends, focusing on the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases, the third epidemiological transition and climate change
• identify the four main groups of non-communicable diseases, four modifiable risk factors for non-communicable diseases and at least three inequalities that contribute to the inequitable distribution of these risk factors
• discuss the rehabilitation professional’s role within emerging global health trends, focusing on promoting physical activity at an individual, community and policy level

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
