Introduction

The ethical reasoning bridge is a framework that supports ethical decision-making processes for healthcare professionals and their patients. This approach to ethical decision-making can foster mutual understanding and learning and is applicable across diverse cross-cultural settings.

This framework helps connect two different perspectives - the healthcare professional's and the patient's. It has three characteristic features: a knowledge-theoretical approach, which considers the relationship between different types of ethics and how these relationships are understood; a dialectical approach, which shows how different forms of knowledge interconnect to facilitate learning and action; and finally a symbolic crossing and recrossing of the ethical bridge when reasoning, making decisions, taking action and reflecting.

This course explores the characteristic features of the ethical reasoning bridge and introduces concepts such as wide reflective equilibrium and dialectical reasoning, which together can lead to transformative learning for healthcare providers and patients.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• differentiate between at least four different types of clinical reasoning strategies
• discuss the features and characteristics of the two sides of the ethical reasoning bridge, as well as the benefits of crossing and recrossing the ethical reasoning bridge in clinical and ethical decision-making

Target audience

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

We expect the required elements to take around 1.5-2 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
