Introduction
Rehabilitation interventions improve range of motion, strength, balance, and coordination, but what drives these changes? This course introduces neuroplasticity and motor learning - two key processes that underpin rehabilitation outcomes. Neuroplasticity enables the nervous system to respond to new information, sensory stimulation, and damage throughout the lifespan. Motor learning involves acquiring and modifying movement patterns through practice. The course explores these neuroscience principles and discusses their application in rehabilitation across commonly treated conditions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course you will be able to:
- compare four different mechanisms of brain plasticity
- discuss the ten principles of experience-dependent plasticity and their application in clinical practice
- describe the connections between neuroplasticity and motor learning, and how the OPTIMAL theory of motor learning relates to neuroplasticity

This course is aimed at rehabilitation professionals, students and assistants including but not limited to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Rehabilitation Doctors, Rehabilitation Nurses, Prosthetists, Orthotists, Psychologists, Audiologists, Dietetics, Social Workers. Community Health Workers, Nurses or Medical Doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
