Introduction

Paediatric lower extremity and gait concerns are common reasons for visits to paediatricians and therapy services. They can account for up to 16% of all new paediatric orthopaedic surgeon referrals. While some conditions resolve with time, others can persist and cause gait issues and pain, making it difficult for children to keep up with their peers later in life. Therefore, paediatric rehabilitation professionals need to understand typical and atypical lower extremity development and know when to initiate a referral to a paediatrician or orthopaedic surgeon.

This course provides a brief overview of the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, assessment and treatment options for common lower extremity torsional conditions, such as femoral anteversion and retroversion and tibial torsion.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss the key features and impact of femoral and tibial torsion and femoral anteversion and retroversion
  • identify the key components of the rehabilitation assessment for lower extremity torsional conditions
  • list at least two common interventions for lower extremity torsional conditions

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
