Introduction
Stress is any intrinsic or extrinsic stimulus that provokes a biological response. A stress response is our compensatory reaction to a stressor. Stress has various effects on the body. Appropriate levels of stress can improve strength, endurance and power, but suboptimal levels can lead to injury or delay healing. When an athlete encounters a stressor that causes injury, they have an immediate physiological response to initiate healing. To optimise the rehabilitation of injured athletes, it is essential to understand the body's response to stress and the process of healing. This course will introduce the physical stress theory, general adaptation syndrome, and soft tissue and bone healing processes.
Aims
This course aims to introduce the physiological processes that occur in the body in response to load and injury. It also highlights how this knowledge can be used to design an appropriate rehabilitation programme.
