Introduction

Overhead sports, such as baseball, volleyball, and handball, place high mechanical demands on the shoulder, thereby increasing the risk of injury. Overhead athletes develop unique adaptations due to the repetitive nature of their sport. This results in predictable differences in their shoulder strength and range of motion compared to non-overhead athletes. This course highlights normal adaptive changes in overhead athletes before exploring pathological findings, specific assessment techniques, and targeted treatment strategies.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • discuss specific aspects of the range of motion and strength assessment for overhead athletes and unique features of their presentation
  • identify potential causes of movement limitations and strength deficits in overhead athletes
  • describe at least three interventions that can help address range of motion and strength deficits in overhead athletes

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.
