Introduction

Codes of ethics have deep historical roots, with early ethical codes established at the onset of rational medicine with the Hippocratic oath. Modern codes of ethics have since replaced these ancient oaths, and countries possess unique, specific codes tailored to each health profession. While these codes mirror societal differences, they all serve the same purpose. They are vital documents that delineate the key values and behaviours expected of healthcare professionals, providing guidance for clinicians and transparency for the public. Codes of ethics aim to guide ethical decision-making for clinicians and encourage consistency with their profession's values. In this course, we explore the significance and evolution of these codes.
