Introduction

Rehabilitation professionals regularly encounter complex situations that require careful ethical consideration. Effective ethical decision-making requires rehabilitation professionals to recognise sensitive situations, understand the moral values at stake and consider relevant ethical principles, professional obligations and regulations. The Realm-Individual Process-Situation (RIPS) Model of Ethical Decision Making provides a comprehensive framework that extends beyond traditional ethical approaches, acknowledging that social and cultural values differ across healthcare settings. This model addresses ethical situations across individual, organisational and societal realms while including important aspects of moral reasoning.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to:

• describe the RIPS model according to its different components (realms, individual processes and situations) and its value and limitations
• discuss the four steps of the ethical decision making process used in the RIPS model

Target audience

This course is aimed at Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy clinicians, students and assistants. Other interested professionals such as athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nurses or medical doctors interested in this subject are also invited to participate.

• Hours of Learning - No deadlines are applied to this course and it can be started and completed in your own time according to your personal schedule. We expect the required elements to take around 1-1.5 hours depending on your schedule and learning style. Additionally there are many optional resources provided and if you choose to review these the course could take longer to complete.
