The Physiopedia Clinical Case Simulator on Physiopedia Plus (Plus) lets you practise clinical reasoning on simulated patients, with no real caseload needed. These five ideas show you how to build it into your week, whether you have five spare minutes or a full teaching session.
If you haven’t used the new Clinical Case Simulator on Plus then our introduction to the Clinical Case Simulator covers what it is and how to get started. And if you are keen to get started but not sure how, then here are some ideas for challenging your clinical reasoning today:
- Try a specialty outside your comfort zone. Pick an area you’d like to get better at, run it at beginner level to find your feet, then run the same specialty again at intermediate to push yourself. Repeating the specialty rather than the case is what builds real familiarity.
- Do a five-minute speed run. Work through a beginner case as fast as you can. It trains the quick, intuitive decision-making you fall back on when a real clinic is running behind, and it fits into a coffee break.
- Drill the one-liner. Run three cases and work only on the problem representation, stopping once you can sum each patient up in a single clear sentence. A sharp one-liner is the foundation everything else in the encounter rests on.
- Stress-test your differentials. Advanced cases reward you for holding two hypotheses at once, so use them to practise weighing competing explanations rather than committing too early. It’s a controlled way to notice where your reasoning tends to jump ahead.
- Take it into teaching. Run a case on screen with a group and let them decide the next question together. It needs no preparation, and running the same specialty and level across small groups lets you compare how each one reasoned through it afterwards.
Each case takes around 20 to 40 minutes, and you can stop at any point and still get feedback, so even one of these makes for a worthwhile week. For those that you complete and Pass you will be able to download a certificate to demonstrate your learning. Sign in to Physiopedia Plus to open the simulator, or read the introduction to the tool first if you’d like to know more.
The Clinical Case Simulator is a useful addition to your learning toolbox, and these five ideas are only a starting point. Once you are comfortable with how a case works, you will find plenty of ways of your own to fold it into how you learn, whether that is targeting a weak spot, warming up before a placement or building a teaching session around it.
