The Physiopedia Plus (Plus) Comprehensive Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Programme has empowered over 3,800 healthcare professionals worldwide, equipping them with evidence-based practices and practical skills essential for optimal SCI care. The programme, designed for healthcare providers working with SCI patients, has already demonstrated remarkable results.
The FULL programme of courses is now available on Plus. The curriculum spans 22 specialised courses addressing every aspect of SCI care and is lead by four instructors with extensive clinical experience – Melanie Harding (Skeen), Wendy Oelofse, Candace Vermaak and Maha Tayseer Mohammad. The programme’s instructors collectively bring decades of hands-on experience in spinal cord rehabilitation. Each expert contributes unique insights from their specialised areas of practice, ensuring participants receive well-rounded, practical knowledge they can immediately apply in their clinical settings.
The programme offers:
- Evidence-based treatment principles for varying levels of injury
- Specialised modules for tetraplegia, paraplegia and incomplete SCI
- Practical guidelines for physical activity and community reintegration
- Comprehensive coverage of vital aspects, including respiratory care, spasticity management, and autonomic dysfunction
- Tailored physiotherapy assessment, prognosis and goal setting, as well as treatment principles
- Multidisciplinary team care, including the role of the occupational therapist and ADL and home modifications
- Essential training in mobility solutions, from gait training to wheelchair skills
Participants consistently highlight enhanced confidence in patient assessment, treatment planning and the implementation of advanced rehabilitation techniques. However, this programme’s impact extends beyond technical skills, fostering a more holistic approach to patient care.
“I have realised it is not about how one is performing exercises, but how I can make patients active and enjoy what they are doing.”
The programme has strengthened participants’ clinical reasoning and documentation skills. Evidence-based practices are now better integrated into daily care and team-based care delivery. Practitioners report significant improvements in respiratory management, spasticity control and pressure care prevention.
The practical demonstrations feature real patient interactions. These sessions showcase essential techniques from respiratory care to advanced wheelchair and gait mobility training. As an example, participants get to witness first-hand how to perform assisted coughing techniques on patients with different levels of SCI and in varying positions.
“The way Melanie Harding explained respiratory management, along with short video clips, was so informative, especially for tetraplegic and high-level paraplegic patients! Thank you, Plus for providing such an opportunity to learn.” Physiotherapist, Pakistan
This is an essential skill that exemplifies the programme’s focus on interdisciplinary collaboration.
The Strength and Conditioning course and the Early Rehabilitation in Paraplegia and Tetraplegia courses provide detailed demonstrations of rehabilitative strengthening and stretching techniques, as well as how to perform basic mobility skills. The Wheelchair Mobility course features actual patients navigating both indoor and outdoor environments under expert guidance.
“The tutor’s practical, hands-on approach helped me apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios and enhanced the learning experience” – Physiotherapist, UK
Of particular note are the Upper Limb Management courses, which break down complex rehabilitation techniques into manageable steps, such as teaching patients with tetraplegia to maintain shoulder flexion with extended elbows – a crucial skill that practitioners may find challenging to master.
The programme’s success is reflected in reported patient outcomes, with practitioners noting better functional independence levels and increased patient engagement in rehabilitation.
“This knowledge also enhances my ability to educate patients and their families on injury management and long-term care”.
This educational initiative continues to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, enabling healthcare providers to deliver more effective, evidence-based care for individuals with spinal cord injuries.
This programme’s success is significantly enhanced by the generous participation of patients who share their rehabilitation journeys, providing invaluable real-world context to the learning experience. Their willingness to demonstrate their progress and celebrate their achievements adds an inspiring dimension to this comprehensive educational initiative.
