The 2026 theme recognises that young people make up more than half of the global population and are powerful engines for innovation and social change. Yet despite their potential, many face persistent barriers including limited access to quality education and decent work opportunities. Because their lives and opportunities are directly shaped by education, young people must be active partners in reimagining how learning works. As technology continues to transform our world, involving youth in co-creating modern, relevant and inclusive education systems is essential to ensuring that teaching and learning truly meet their aspirations.
The statistics are sobering: today, 250 million children and adolescents are out of school, and 763 million adults are illiterate. Without inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all, countries cannot achieve gender equality or break the cycle of poverty affecting millions worldwide. The right to education, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and recognised as critical to achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals, remains unfulfilled for too many.
