The International Rehabilitation Education and Training Toolkit (IRETT) has launched an innovative mentor training program to address the critical global need for rehabilitation workforce development. The IRETT, developed through USAID’s Learning, Acting and Building for Rehabilitation in Health Systems (ReLAB-HS) activity, provides a comprehensive suite of resources and tools designed to strengthen rehabilitation capacity worldwide.
What is the IRETT?
The IRETT comprises evidence-based tools and frameworks that support rehabilitation workforce development across education, regulation, and clinical training. The toolkit has been successfully implemented in multiple countries including Pakistan, Ukraine, Myanmar, and Uganda, leading to significant positive changes to rehabilitation education programs, professional standards, and continuing professional development systems.
Starting January 20, 2024, IRETT is launching its first mentor training program. This 10-week course will prepare experienced rehabilitation professionals to lead workforce development projects globally. Participants will learn to use IRETT’s specialised tools for academic program development, professional regulation, and clinical skills training.
The Training Program
Over 10 weeks, participants will learn from experienced international mentors who have successfully implemented IRETT projects globally. Participants will gain expertise in cross-cultural communication, sustainable capacity building, and adapting approaches to different contexts and resources. The program focuses on three essential areas:
- Academic program development and review
- Professional regulation and standards
- Clinical skills training program development
Upon completion, graduates will be qualified to lead IRETT projects worldwide. These opportunities may be voluntary or paid, including potential involvement in grant-funded development projects. Mentors work directly with organisations and stakeholders in various countries, contributing their expertise to strengthen rehabilitation services globally.
