The remarkable transformation of continuing professional development for physiotherapists in Saint Lucia showcases how creative approaches to blended learning can overcome traditional limitations of distance, cost and resources.

With just 20 members, the Physiotherapy Association of Saint Lucia Inc. (PASL Inc.) represents one of the smallest member associations of World Physiotherapy. On an island of 180,000 people, accessing relevant continuing education has historically meant expensive flights, time away from practice and limited local opportunities. Yet this Caribbean association has pioneered an innovative approach to professional development that larger organisations worldwide are now seeking to replicate, combining Physiopedia Plus online courses with monthly virtual discussion groups to create meaningful learning experiences that meet regulatory requirements whilst building professional community.

The journey began with frustration. A 2016 member survey revealed overwhelming challenges including no local physiotherapy learning opportunities, prohibitively expensive international travel and too few practitioners to make specialised local courses viable. Previous attempts at journal clubs failed due to limited access to quality research, whilst rotational peer teaching sessions quickly exhausted volunteers and topics. The association needed a sustainable solution that would meet the Saint Lucia Allied Health Council’s requirement of 15 annual continuing education hours whilst addressing the unique challenges of practising on a small island.

When COVID-19 eliminated the possibility of their annual in person education event, PASL Inc. turned necessity into opportunity. Despite having access to Physiopedia Plus membership benefits since 2017, many members weren’t actively engaging with the platform. Some had never logged on, others found courses too long or struggled with the technology. Rather than accepting this status quo, the association developed a structured approach that would transform member engagement.

“I personally find that Physiopedia Plus is really great for online learning and continuing education,” shares Elaine Clement, the PASL Inc. President at that time. “Accessing continuing education in a small island is challenging due to little availability locally and the high cost of travel to attend conferences and courses. Physiopedia Plus makes access to continuing education easy! There is so much available, the topics are diverse and the learning methods available suit all learning types.”

The association’s innovative solution was elegantly simple yet profoundly effective. Each month, they selected a short course from the extensive Physiopedia Plus library, encouraging all members to complete it at their own pace. This is was followed by an informal virtual discussion group where members shared insights, debated applications and connected clinical theory to their island practice context. The first session on motor learning drew seven participants, sparking vibrant discussion about practical applications. Even topics members wouldn’t have independently chosen, like blood flow restriction therapy, generated unexpected enthusiasm and relevant clinical conversations.

This blended approach addresses multiple challenges simultaneously. Members who find online learning daunting receive peer support and technical assistance. The structured monthly rhythm creates accountability that helps practitioners prioritise professional development amidst busy clinical schedules. Virtual discussions maintain professional connections that became even more vital during pandemic lockdowns. Most importantly, the model transforms isolated online learning into collaborative professional growth that strengthens the entire physiotherapy community.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with members reporting they appreciate the short, manageable courses and the motivation provided by group discussions. One member noted, “Having a more structured learning environment within a small group encourages members to complete a course they may not have considered before.” The informal discussions have become particularly valued, keeping members connected whilst exploring how international best practices apply to their specific Caribbean healthcare context.

The Saint Lucia model demonstrates that effective partnerships with Physiopedia Plus aren’t about technology replacing traditional learning but rather enhancing it through thoughtful integration. By combining self paced online courses with facilitated peer discussion, PASL has created a sustainable continuing education programme that costs a fraction of traditional alternatives whilst delivering superior engagement and community building. Their reduced association subscription makes world class education accessible to all members, regardless of individual financial circumstances.

This success story resonates far beyond the Caribbean. Similar challenges face physiotherapy communities across island nations, remote regions and lower resource settings globally. The PASL experience proves that geographical isolation need not mean professional isolation, and that small associations can leverage global knowledge platforms to deliver education programmes that rival those in major metropolitan centres. Their blended learning approach offers a replicable model for any organisation seeking to maximise member engagement whilst minimising costs.

For Physiopedia, partnerships like PASL’s embody our mission of universal access to physiotherapy knowledge. Every renewal, every success story and every innovation from our partner organisations strengthens the global physiotherapy community. When a physiotherapist in Saint Lucia applies evidence based techniques learned through our platform, or shares insights with colleagues in virtual discussions, they contribute to a worldwide network of knowledge exchange that ultimately benefits patients everywhere.
